Repertoire example

Exercising the repertoire of (romanesque/gothic) historiated initials in medieval manuscripts could be broken down into the studie and practice of these consituent parts:

  • Lettering: Lomards, calligraphy
  • Ornament: typical forms of penwork and other more extensive forms of borders, embellishments etc.
  • Pattern: fills for backgrounds
  • Figure: stilized representations of human, animal, object, etc.
